Kim hails from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. Born into a family of talented singers, actors and musicians, she knew very early that she wanted to get into the arts. She started dance lessons at age six, performed in her first school play at age seven and by age fourteen she'd moved on to singing in clubs and doing professional theatre productions. By eighteen, she had signed a two-year deal with A&M Records. Her first single, "He's My Lover" won her a Juno award for Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year in 1986. Her second single, "Peek-A-Boo", brought her another Juno for the Best R&B/Soul Recording the following year. In 1994, after relocating from Toronto to Montreal, magic struck again when the group The Merlin Factor (of which she was the lead singer) won a Juno for the Best Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year and earned a Juno nomination in the same category the year after. In 2006, she released her first solo CD entitled Kaleidoscope – a co-production with blues singer and friend Nanette Workman.
Kim has dabbled with all types of music: rock, pop, disco, house, R&B, funk, gospel, jazz, country and even classical. Although not classically trained, she travelled to Prague, Czech Republic to record a classical piece composed by Philippe Leduc entitled The Wings of Fire with an 85-piece orchestra. She has also travelled to Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Morocco, Colombia, Netherlands, Germany and most parts of France.
Kim was honoured to participate in the concert for Nelson Mandela, when he and the former Mrs. Mandela visited Montreal shortly after his release from prison. She has also performed for HRH Queen Elizabeth, former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and former Governor General of Canada Adrienne Clarkson. She also has done many commercials and studio sessions and is no stranger to singing the American and Canadian (both English and French versions) national anthems at certain sporting events, the most memorable being the last home game of the Montreal Expos. She has shared the stage with such artists as the late Barry White, Paul Anka, Lesley Gore, Chris DeBurgh, Céline Dion, Ann Nesby (from Sounds of Blackness), Deborah Cox, Tina Arena, Murray Head, the late Robert Palmer, Lara Fabian and many local Quebec artists such as Ginette Reno, Richard Séguin, Bruno Pelletier, Nanette Workman, Éric Lapointe, Dan Bigras, Roch Voisine, Isabelle Boulay, Gregory Charles and many more. Her most memorable collaborations were with the one and only Stevie Wonder (a chance meeting in a Toronto nightclub led to an impromptu jam session!) and the other with Montreal’s own Gino Vannelli – a dream fulfilled!
Kim had a lot of fun working on a different venture - acting in a feature film called Funkytown, released in January 2011. She also co-wrote and recorded the song “Waiting For Your Touch” for the movie soundtrack.
Kim’s newest project is that of her new French album, Mes amours. Produced by André Di Cesare (Star.ca) and arrangements by Jeff Fisher, this album brings a new take on some seasoned French songs. From Gilbert Bécaud’s La maison sous les arbres to Jean-Pierre Ferland’s Ton visage, Kim offers her softer, gentler side.
